It was great to see so many parents at the parent/teacher conferences Thursday night. If you did not have a chance to attend and would like to speak with your child's teachers, please call the school and set up a day and time for a conference.

We have had a very successful Red Ribbon Week. A special thanks to Deputy Jennifer Buchanan for all of her hard work. The assembly on Friday was enjoyed by all especially the participants in the "Eat Bugs, Not Drugs" activity.

On Monday night we will hold another Parent's Workshop. Tammy Franklin from the Dade County Health Department and Carla Jones, DMS school nurse will speak to parents about health issues and middle school students. It promises to be a very informative session. It will begin at 7:00 in the DMS media center.

Friday was our Principal's Award Assembly and in addition to recognizing 40 students, we were presented with a banner from the Georgia Department of Education. This is quite an honor and accomplishment for DMS as you will read in the letter we received from the Executive Director of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement.

Dear Principal:

It is my honor to congratulate Dade Middle School as a winner in the 2007 Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) awards. Your hard work and that of your students, faculty, and community has earned your school a silver award for making great gains in student achievement.

The SASS competition for a silver award in the greatest gains category is impressive. Schools must meet 3 criteria to be determined winners:

Make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for 2 consecutive years;
Demonstrate that at least 25% of students exceed standards in all test areas as measured by state assessments; and
Place in the 96th percentile or higher statewide in greatest student achievement gains.

It takes the collaborative effort of teachers, principals, and parents working with students to reap this level of success, and I applaud your entire school community for this accomplishment. Dade Middle School is one of only 5 middle schools in the state of Georgia to receive this award for the 2006-2007 school year.

Again, congratulations! I wish your school continued success and extend my best wishes to your entire school community as we work together to build a more educated Georgia.

As we enter the home stretch of the 2007-2008 school year, there are several items that I need you to go over with your youngster. The media center is in desperate need of locating or at least accounting for all books. The books need to be inventoried, boxed, labeled, and moved so that the carpet can be pulled up and new tile be put down.
