The Principal's Corner

From the desk of Karen de Marché
January 14, 2008

- Report cards go home on Tuesday, January 15th. Students who owe money in the cafeteria will not receive their reports cards until their debt is cleared.

- The 8th grade state writing assessment will be given on Wednesday, January 16 from 8:30 to 10:45. Please be sure your youngster gets a good night's sleep and arrives to school on time.

- 6th and 7th graders will also have a writing assessment on Wednesday. This gives them good practice and will also allows for us to keep the building quiet while the 8th graders begin their official state testing season!

- Mrs. Smart's team will be going on a field trip to the Birmingham Museum of Art on Wednesday. They will take their writing assessment on Thursday.

- The second 9 weeks Principals Awards will be held on Friday at 8:30.

- Dr. Watkins will be attending the Georgia Leaders Institute in Atlanta on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

- Remember that after school tutoring and homework assistance is available through the DMS after school program. There is a nominal $25.00 fee that covers the entire semester. The program runs Monday through Thursday from after school until 5:30. There will be a special emphasis placed on CRCT preparation during the after school program beginning in March.

- As you view your child's report card, it might be helpful to remember the promotion/retention policy. A student is expected to pass 5 out of 5 academic subjects in order to be promoted. If a student fails 1 subject, he/she will be promoted on probation and will have to repeat the course he/she failed. If a student fails 2 or more subjects, he/she will be retained.

- To schedule a conference with your child's teachers, please call the school at 657-6491.

The Principal's Corner

May 5, 2008

As we enter the home stretch of the 2007-2008 school year, there are several items that I need you to go over with your youngster. The media center is in desperate need of locating or at least accounting for all books. The books need to be inventoried, boxed, labeled, and moved so that the carpet can be pulled up and new tile be put down.
